Keynote Address - Low Carbon Energy Research in the North West
Bob Owen MBE – Chairman, The Joule Centre for Energy Research
The transition to a sustainable, Low Carbon energy economy can only be achieved cost-effectively if it is underpinned by effective innovation. The Joule Centre was established in 2005 by the NWDA to support such innovation in all aspects of energy. It is a partnership of the region’s universities, industries and other stakeholders and undertakes research in both the supply and use of energy. Examples will be given of successful projects, which have contributed both to the development of energy technologies and also support the transformation of our energy system. Particular attention will be given to the perceived conflict between the transition to a low carbon energy system and economic and environmental sustainability.

Carbon Management and the Water Industry
Chris Matthews – Carbon Manager, United Utilities
United Utilities is actively implementing a carbon management strategy, driven by its Carbon Manager (United Utilities was the first water company to appoint a full time Carbon Manager). The journey to understand and manage carbon is underway and has a lot to do with leadership within the company as much as influencing behaviour of staff and individuals. Also key is to be able to account for energy costs and to see where the company can adapt its processes to mitigate and reduce energy use. This is apparent at a company level - United Utilities’ energy bill is massive - but also at a site level. United Utilities manages 1700 operational sites from Crewe to Carlisle.
Chris will set out the ‘story so far’, how United Utilities is getting organised, its priority areas, and he will invite people to help with solutions – such as co-digestion, in-pipe hydro generation, and energy efficiency devices. United Utilities’ current capital programme is one of the largest in the country at £4billion over 5 years - £2million per day - so there's huge scope to introduce innovative solutions.

Transport: Controlling costs and protecting the environment
Keith O’Connor – Managing Director, Fleetsolve Ltd
Keith O’Connor Managing Director of Fleetsolve Ltd will discuss the environmental issues that will face corporate fleets in the coming years. Fleetsolve will provide an overview of the current risks and opportunities to fleets and of the subsequent environmental impact. The presentation will include information on fuel security both in the supply chain and vehicle fleet reducing operating costs, whilst safeguarding your operation and drivers. Fleet efficiency and sustainability go hand in hand; creative fleet structures can improve sustainability and reduce costs.
Confused by the differing green fuel advice, decisions made now will affect your fleet for years to come. ‘Being Seen to be Green’ is now one of the most important topics on company agendas. What does it mean? Is your green fleet policy up to scrutiny? Is your company green at all levels or just those in the public domain? Fleetsolve will suggest a variety of ways that a fleet manager can improve the green credentials of your business.

Getting low carbon solutions to market
Alan South - Chief Innovation Officer, Solarcentury
The manufacturing costs of solar photovoltaics are coming down steadily. They are in fact cheaper today than retail electricity in some markets, and by 2010 will be cheaper than today's electricity in MOST developed country markets. Meanwhile, of course, the price of polluting electricity is on the way up. The two trend lines will cross over within a few years in most places in the world, and at that point people will be amazed at how fast solar and its sister low-carbon technologies can invade traditional energy markets. The sister technologies will include storage technologies, and via plug-in hybrids, transport technologies. The future can be bright, though the jury is very much out on whether we are collectively smart enough to make it so.
